Whether you're new to chastity or have been exploring for a while finding the right cage can take some trial and error. Here I'll cover some of the main questions I get asked. Some of the links are affiliate links and generate commission for me.
The most important thing you can do when purchasing a cage is to measure carefully. Measure your flaccid size using the sizing guide on the website and don't be tempted to size up due to ego. A cage that's too large can cause almost as many issues as one that's too small. Also, don't size down considerably or buy cages with spikes or sounding rods if you are brand new. Going too fast into the kink won't benefit you and will make you more likely to hurt yourself or fail.
When first wearing a cage it is normal to feel some discomfort as you get used to the feeling. However, this should never be painful and you should build up the amount of time you wear your cage gradually over a few days or weeks. Remember that the cage should be snug but comfortable. You don't want to cut off blood supply. If you experience bad pain during wear or discomfort that wakes you you need to resize either the cage or the ring.
Chastity is more mental than physical. And while a chastity device adds to the experience it is not essential to wear one. Many subs successfully practice mental chastity.
Consider the material you'd like for your cage. I recommend plastic or metal for more extended wear; however, this is down to personal preference. From my experience, most subs will begin with plastic cages. I suggest silicone only for short play sessions as I find it works better as an erotic accessory than doing the job of a chastity device.
Popular cages and my thoughts:
(in alphabetical order)
Amazon - You can find many value cages on amazon. Most are copies of the more expensive devices. I've heard mixed reviews from subs and would suggest spending the extra money on a known brand if you intend to wear it for longer periods.
Cheaper cages are great for when you're first trying out chastity and for trying different sizes and styles before investing in something more expensive.
Cobra - 3d printed. Good reviews from subs. Has quickly gained popularity. Good for hygiene.
Cherry Keeper - good variety of sizes. Customisable fit as you choose the ring and cage on their own.
Holy Trainer - a classic. Older styles are more affordable. Range of sizes and colurs. Can get custom colours and designs.

Vice - secure fitting cage. A good range of cage and ring sizing options. Is more on the expensive side so I don't recommend this as a first cage if you are unsure of which size to get.

Cellmate - limited size range. Fun to use with a long distance partner. The app and design has improved a lot since the first release. It is translated from Chinese to english so some of the wording can take getting used to when navigating the app.

Custom cages - some subs choose to have custom metal or 3d printed cages made to measure. This is definitely worth considering if you are spending a lot of time in your cage.
Where to purchase:
Most adult stores these days have a selection of cages but I would recommend buying from a specialist chastity or sissy store or directly from the manufacturer. I have links in the section above for the cages I've mentioned as these are the most widely used by my subs but by all means spend an afternoon doing your own research and you'll find hundreds of suppliers and options.
Keyholding
Although not essential many subs find it easier to remain caged if someone else has their key. I offer key holding - please see my chastity page (launching soon).
When choosing a key holder think about how much interaction and guidance you're looking for. For virtual key holding think about how much input you'll need. Do you want lots of encouragement with daily checks in or do you prefer more hands-off? Do you want specific content during your time caged? Be sure to have a rough idea what you want before contacting your desired key holder.
If you have a partner or friend you want to hold your key then it's great to have a chat about both of your expectations. Discuss what your limits are and also your needs to make sure you start off with a good level of understanding and communication.
Many subs are successful keeping control of their own key. Especially those who may need unlocked frequently for sports, travel, or work. It's all about the mindset.
If you struggle with temptation there are a few ways to deal with this.
freeze your key
Use a timed lockbox
leave your key at home, at work, or at a friends house (easily accessible but you won't be able to unlock impulsively)
bury your key in your garden ~ partly a joke but hilarious to imagine you furiously searching through dirt for a key.
